The first few days of January to the end of a vacation for a few people who spent Christmas with us. Itâ € ™ s always a sad moment, as people who came as customers and leave as friends depart, but most of the book so we all meet again. As I write this report heatwave continues, we have the hottest January on record, the sun is merciless, and each day over 100 degrees. We havenâ € ™ t had a drop of rain for five weeks in the lake has dropped a foot when we water the garden twice a day from the lake. The gardens are struggling in the heat of the jungle around us, trees are brown so I just hope there ISNA € ™ ta fire! The intense heat and flat calm weather makes fishing very hard, especially for the Arapaima, they are simply not feeding hard at all, just take the odd snack. Mekong catfish are starting to feed in earnest again himself, and it seems Stingray like hot weather, too. Talking of Stingray, I was landing one the angler Eric Keogh, and rays are hard to net – it takes two or three of us to mistreat them in web. When I was pushing the fish into the net, swiss the tail, spear its sting into my mouth and I have never in my life experienced pain like it! In seconds my whole leg was on fire, it was as if someone presses a glowing poker up my leg and all my muscles began to seize up as I went into shock.
Boys at sea packed me into our car and drove like maniacs to the local hospital where they had been pre-warned of our arrival. The hospital had staff waiting and I was rushed into emergency. By now the pain was excruciating and my shirt was soaked of sweat. Immediately two doctors appeared and began to inject my feet with anesthetic and an anti-poison type fabric. Then the doctor cut the wound and removed the plug and a black skin, covering sting. The wound was so full of antibiotics and wadding. I had to go to hospital every day for over a week for more injections, and to have opened the wound and purified. All of our skates in the lake had removed their stings, but we were not aware that every so often a stingray has two stings. This one had been overlooked and had two, they sting folds flat to the tail and we had missed this. The 110 pounds of fish had its sting removed this time. We have a Stingray at over 200 pounds in the lake and in the future we will no longer net them in this way until we are sure that sting is absent. Fishing at the lake is perfectly safe as rays stay away from people. They are just like any creature – If a corner and went into panic, they lash out. The only time they will run away is when you start annoying them. It was my own fault for being Blas? on these beautiful fish. I would have more respect for them next time and for our customerâ € ™ s certainly not angling is allowed in the lake before all the fish have been contained and made safe. This ensures that our customers are 100% safe at all times. For the record freshwater stingray is believed to reach 1000 pounds with wingspans 5m, so this fish was a baby really £ 110th Mind you, can you imagine a £ 110 Hornet? We have five different species of fish in Gillham over 100 pounds, and landing these huge fish are dangerous. We are professional, but we still get hurt, an angular € ™ s lapses in concentration is all it takes. I will reiterate our customers are safe, so long as they take our advice and not go in the water â € ~ For we say that it is 100% safe to do so.
We are still getting the odd person with an emphasis on odd that come here, get a huge fish and feel betrayed because they wanted an increase. A guy in this month had a £ 60 Chao Phraya catfish, which is only four pounds off the world record, but he did not want a photo because he said he will wait for a big fish. He even admitted it was the biggest fish he had ever caught! Mind you the same guy had his biggest carp, but waited until a larger one, so when he had an Arapaima and a large red tail catfish in one day, he was also disappointed because he had to wait a whole seven hours between fish! Oh where do they come from? Fortunately, real nice guys who appreciate catching fish outweigh these so-called fishermen. Some people just want a trophy shot, and do not want to put in any effort. We even have some who are gutted they donâ € ™ t get more 100 pounds of fish a day with a pair of £ 300 plus fish thrown in. We are considering starting a new service for these people, where people can order their fish online and we will increase their mug behind a fish and send them the picture of their prize without them having to take the trouble to come here and I bet we would have some takers! The other annoying people who come here who really winds us up, it's litter louts. Last week we had a Prat come here who actually called his own Gayland (I kid you not) with her two lovers, which I presume was named Ben Dover and Phil McCavity! Now he (it) was the typical Berk, who only wanted a trophy shot. Upon arrival, they commented on how beautiful the place is that only throw dirt all their swim! Luckily I was out all day and just missed them leaving because their swim was an absolute tip with rubbish strewn everywhere. It took the boys ten minutes to clear the mess of food wrappers, FAG ends and generally crap! If I had been there, I'd be wearing rubber gloves and dragged them out of their blouses to clean up mess yourself! We provide garbage bags and have sand in pots swimmer for meatball ends, so use them. I personally will be really angry at cigarette butts thrown on the ground or thrown into the lake. It makes me wonder what these peopleâ € ™ s house is like. Thatâ € ™ s it – monthly whine about!
Back to a bit of humor – My boss Watt, bless him, is very gullible and Sean got him a treat this month. Watt wanted to know how he could increase the size of his manhood, so Sean informed him about a cream called three-in-one that triples the size of your tackle, and poor young Watts fell for it. My daughter Becca bought some Immac hair remover over at Christmas, so we put it into an ordinary bottle and presented it to Watts. He went with our security man the local police officer, they rubbed the cream around and parts, and sat around an hour to talk about what they would do with their new kingsize arms! After an hour, they washed the cream, along with all their forest. They came to see me in a state of terror and shock, but was very relieved when I told them that it is the first phase of growth and to repeat it next month. Oh, what a horrid person I am! Roll on next month!
The top method in this month looks alien to European anglers, but lots of Siamese carp coming out with a method feeder fished 3ft under a float with a golf ball sized fishmeal boilie suspended beneath it. Now I just ask, would this method work in European waters? The first of the newcomers was our dear friends Wil and Betty from Holland who came last year for a few days and was a few weeks before departing on an epic motorcycle journey from India back to Holland. This time their trip was tame, coming straight to Thailand and back by plane. We are planning a trip together now and June when we go into the jungle to fishing for Thai mahseer, thatâ € ™ s if the unrest in Congo donâ € ™ t end because the moment they are we all planning to race to catch a Goliath Tiger fish. Last year Wil and Betty came as customers, and this year, as many of our guests, they returned as friends. The planned five-day trip here, and once again stayed longer – as Wil entered the fishery trip grew to ten days. We were afraid a second group that came to us when there were 30 persons. We had to arrange a speedboat to collect them from an island 50 miles away and mini-buses to transport them from the beach here, but they were an absolute pleasure to host. The whole day went smoothly and we even managed to hold them for the night, when they didnâ € ™ t want to leave. There was not one person in the group that had the slightest problem, but the fish kept their nuts off though, as there never had been so many lines in the lake at once. Paul and Lorraine, it was a pleasure hosting you all and we look forward to you all back this year for a holiday. With for Lorraine, she deserved a medal organize the whole holiday for the 30th
We also had visits from two brothers who we nicknamed The Wurzel, a really nice couple of lads who lived on a farm in the country and decided to have an adventure. They had never been out of their county, let alone the country, and they had never heard of a place called Oxford, where our guide Kevin sends a greeting from. Imagine boysâ € ™ surprise when they landed in Thailand! Apparently home they donâ € ™ t go out to drink, â € œWeâ € ™ ze donâ € ™ ts assumes dranking, weâ € ™ ze stay wiz a noice cup orf tea.â € We asked a brother if he saw the guy opposite country the great Mekong catfish. He replied, â € œNooooooo, I warz wachinâ € ™ are Arnt – oi loike Arnt, they fazinating indzects.â € Yes they were true characters, really nice boys on an adventure, and imagine their home to the farm explain all the things they had seen their family, â € œDuz yoo nowz in Thailand theyz eat frag snakez a Bugz, and although there gals HAZ got willies, does not like our sis AAT everyone yer nowz! â € I should stop, but they kept us amused and were real nice guys.
So now enough of my nonsense and into fishing. This month has seen 45 day tickets (30 in one group) and 38 guests in Thailand fishing holiday, fishing in Thailand for a few days to a couple of weeks. Between them they landed 465 fish of 15 species distributed followsâ € | Arapaima 25 to £ 400, 12 Mekong catfish to 180 pounds, 255 Siamese carp to 120 pounds, 72 red tail catfish to 80 pounds, five alligator gar to 15 pounds, four Asian red tail catfish to 30 pounds, 13 black Pacu to 30 pounds, seven Chao Phraya catfish to 65 pounds, 19 spotted sorubim to £ 35, four Julian's golden prize carp to 25 pounds, eight spotted featherback to 10 pounds, 17 Rohu carp to 16 pounds, 18 striped Snakehead to four pounds, five giant stingray to £ 120, and a wallago Attu of 24 pounds.
As mentioned earlier Wil, with his better half Betty from Holland was the first new guests after Christmas. The fishing opportunities in the years was slower than last, but as Wil target big fish it suits him and his style of fishing. Wilâ € ™ s goal this year was to fish Siam carp. Betty again was chief photographer journalist, general gopher, and live bait catcher. Betty loves float fishing for our smaller species, but William made strict rules – no float fishing before 09:00 so as not to spook fish! Wil ended his session with five Arapaima to £ 200, Siamese carp 13 to 110 pounds, and three Mekong catfish to £ 130th Thatâ € ™ s three species in one trip over £ 100! Plus he had five red tail catfish to 45 pounds and some Rohu and Pacu.
The next newcomer who came to us via Siam fishing trips, was quite relaxed Mark with his non-fishing wife Carol. I have never in my life met a person as chilled out as Mark, a nice guy who just got caught in the peace and tranquility in Gillham. We had actually to pick up Mark and all his equipment and move him to another place, which for four days, Mark sat and stared in awe at the beauty of our resort is not throwing to demonstrate fish or sometimes for that matter even to throw. Poor Mark ended the trip with only one fish (mind you, there was a more than Siam fishing expeditions succeeded him.) He has promised to turn back with his fishing head next time, but mind you, Mark showed that you do not need to catch fish to enjoy a trip here. Day-ticket visitors pearl necklace Terry came for a day on the busiest day of the month when we had the group of 30 in, but he saw enough to fit a four-hour meeting in the morning before leaving Krabi, and his zeal paid off with a £ 55 Chao Phraya catfish and three Siamese carp to 40 pounds. Ian Norris, an ex-Pat living in Australia has the usual, a 24-hour trip, and left it â € ~ For the last hour to catch, but it was worth the wait once he landed a rare wallago Attu on 24 pounds, followed by the eternally friendly Siamese carp, Black Spot, at £ 70th
Steve Cox made a return visit for a three-day trip with his partner Colin and two Thai friends, Kuan and Jay, who are regulars at Bungsamlan Lake in Bangkok. The Thai lads gave two Englishmen a good lesson in fishing with their knowledge of Thai species, landing 25 fish to Britta € ™ s 11 fish! When coxi leaves Gillham, a large Siamese carp coming out, and this trip was no exception, because he left Wil had a 110 pounds of carp. A second 48-hour visitors was builder Steve Holberry from Manchester with his partner Mark. They landed 12 fish between them, with the icing on the cake go to Steve in the form of a £ 90 Siamese carp. The shoemakers Manchester, John Ross and Slim made short drive from Phuket for a one? day trip. Slim John only made part of the first day, and retired knackered after landing seven carp in a brief flurry of action, decides to stop while ahead, and work their way through our restaurant menu! Ross meanwhile gave his all fishing â € ~ On the final whistle a row of six Siamese carp to 60 pounds, 50 pounds a red tail catfish, and a £ 150 Mekong catfish. This fish took him around the lake, while Slim sat and ate a box with pies. Judging by the amount consumed by Slim, we estimated the match took an hour, or 10 pies, 11 cakes, a bucket of ice, and 20 Trades!
Then came The Incredible Hulk brothers Ricky and Terry Clark. These two giants were spot-on sound guys who came and enjoyed every moment of their stay. They came hoping for an Arapaima, but regardless of what they caught was a bonus – just the attitude needed to fish here. Now is the first day Ricky, who is about 10ft high with a physique that makes Arnie see a sissy caught a nice Mekong catfish. He plucked it from the landing net, as if it were a minnow, â € œHow great, â € he asked? Well Judging by the ease with which he had just lifted it I would have said £ 5, but went for £ 120 instead so as not to offend him! â € œNo, â € he said â € œI expect £ 180, â € and who was I to argue? But to humor him, I went to lift it, and in the midst of laughter from whole, I almost followed up, and certainly it was easy £ 180th Ricky went on to take three Mekong, 17 Siamese carp, two red tail catfish, a Pacu, and his target a lovely £ 200 Arapaima. Terry, who is the same size as Ricky, with arms like hams caught ten fish, including two £ 100-plus Arapaima. I am very happy brothers was here when, as in this period, I had an accident with Stingray, and the guys picked me from the lake as a feather and ran with me to the waiting car. Thanks you two I owe you one. The warm weather was certainly bring rays of feed, two days later Keith from Liverpool landed a second, less a sting! This fish weighed in at 120 pounds, and compensation for a lost Arapaima.
Another relaxed Mr. Nice Guy, Ken Weeks, booked for a week. Ken came to chill out and hopefully catch a few fish. He was great fun to be with, and enjoyed his stay here. The first few days Ken just chilled in the wrong swim, but was not bothered. Later this week he moved to the other end of the lake, landing 31 fish for the week. He got into a shoal of Siamese carp, and took 18 to 50 £. At the same time my dear friends Jamie and Carol Mclean arrived just a quiet break to see us. Jamie did manage a few short sessions between swimming pool and sightseeing, while Carol divulged her secret steak and kidney pudding and bacon pudding recopies to Steve. Oh mate, this is to die for, and is now on the menu here at Gillham – I've already put on another 20 pounds! Jamieâ € ™ s best fish from the five was a red tail at 65 pounds. I had a question before Christmas from a guy named Jerker who wanted to visit for a 48-hour trip. I thought it was a wind-up from a buddy, but actually it shows out to be a popular name in the Scandinavian countries – apparently there are plenty of Jerker over there! I suppose when they leave they say Jerkerâ € ™ s off! Sorry couldnâ € ™ t resist this, itâ € ™ s kind of like the boy called Wayne Kerr. OK back to storyâ € | Jerker was a fishing fanatic he booked three rice and buzzed from the moment he arrived. He had his better half Ida with him and what a pair! He said that the IDA could fish, but he only wanted her to use corn or boilies, so they do not catch bigger fish than him. The first day Ida was a machine, taking eight Siamese carp in a short feeding spell, but the next day, she properly Jerker gave a spanking with a £ 150 Mekong catfish in the morning, followed by another three Siamese carp to £ 120th While all this happened, poor Jerker in the next swim landed only two fish. The following week Jerker back to Daya € ™ s fishing and to save face poor Ida was not allowed to fish! He had a better day, probably because IDA was to show him what to do, landing five fish with a few small carp by Idaâ € ™ s standards, up to 55 pounds, with a lovely featherback around £ 12.
Reiner from Dream Lake in Chiang Mai sent his Austrian Andreas client to us. When he arrived we were in the middle of a heatwave and the fishing was slow, but in a week he still managed 21 fish of five species. His goal featherback escaped him, but on the last day of the last hour of fishing, Andreas landed a dream fish in the form of a £ 400 Arapaima! It was the same fish that rescued Len Gurda € ™ s tour last month, again in the last hour on the last day. The Arapaima is just packing on weight – it was In stock at 300 pounds and avoided capture for 18 months. We are sure if avoiding capture for the next 18 months will reach 500 pounds! At the same time as Andrew, we had German client Peter for three days. Peterâ € ™ s goal was the predator, and he scored with two Arapaima, best £ 160-plus a £ 85 stingray, and took also three red tail catfish. Germany has done a good appearance here this month, and our final German client for the month was catfish fanatic Michael Zellner, who came in four day and immediately rebooked for July when the heat wave will well and truly over, as it will be our rainy season at that time. Michael landed only nine fish Because of the extreme heat we experienced the warmest January on record, but he did land his dream fish, an Arapaima 120th of £ Michaela € ™ s attitude was what we want everyoneâ € ™ s would be, enjoy your holiday – one big fish do leave, and he could see enough potential here if the weather is such that recreate book.
A bit of a sad, is the way to describe the next visitor. Here at Gillham we all want to enjoy peace and tranquility of the lake. We designed a fisheries the specialist angler where patience will be rewarded with the biggest fish of your dreams. Most people catch a dream fish for a week and sometimes two or three. We have never claimed Gillham as a mackerel fishing place where you catch a fish a chuck from a crowded storage pond, where all the fish are starving and emaciated. Our fish is the largest and best-conditioned fish in Asia because of a low density and an abundance of natural foods. You should expect about four fish per day with a dream fish as a bonus. Henk from Holland and Job had not done their homework, because if you look at our website you will see that we are not a single specie overstocked bowl, and we chose area for its peace, tranquility and beauty, not as Bungsamlan in Bangkok where you can sit with crowds of Muppets border lines among skyscrapers and smoke, pull out long bags of starved, beaten catfish before heading back to your hotel through traffic jams for a night of debauchery in girlie bars. Unfortunately Gillham was not Henk and Job, so after a few days of fishing only part time they landed six fish, with a stingray in £ 80 and Siamese carp to 50 pounds before returning to Bangkok for a wild time in bars, plus sticking hooks into many half starved and dingy Mekong and striped catfish among the spectators.
In contrast to Henk and Job, next guest had read up on us, and would have peace, tranquility and big fish in beautiful surroundings. The spritely 70-year-young Arthur Hawkins, with its lovely fishing partner and wife, Angie, came a week on his way home from visiting their daughter and grandchildren in Australia. Arthur first noticed Gillham through the article by Gary Newman in Anglers Mail after Anglers Mail visit here. Arthurâ € ™ s goal was a big fish of all species that he wanted to win a Jonny foreigner hat. In a week of chilling out and a second honeymoon, Arthur landed 13 fish of five species, the best is two Arapaima to 220 pounds, and four red-tail catfish to £ 75th Not to be left, Angie showed just what women can do, she was a very competent and experienced fisher woman who is thoroughly enjoying retirement with Arthur, fisheries worldwide. Angie landed 12 fish of four species, the best is four red-tail catfish to 80 pounds, and six Siamese carp to 45 pounds. If poor Angie had lost a few big fish, one being an Arapaima, she would have upstaged Arthur. The pair both aware that the extreme heat was slower fishing, but agreed that Gillham still would be paradise without fish – in their words, the fish was a bonus. Top pair, top fishing – we'll see both of them later this year.
Gillham have begun to be noticed in Singapore, so if any of our Singaporean fans read this and know the dates of Singapore fishing shows, please email me so we can participate and show what we have only a 1? hour flight from Singapore. A guy who made the trip this month was Nick Wheeler, an ex-pat Englishman living and working there, Nick came with his wife and one-year-old daughter for a week € ™ s holiday with three days fishing and landed ten fish in the three days of six species of Arapaima to £ 120, Chao Phraya catfish to 60 pounds, a baby Mekong catfish of 65 pounds, plus red tail catfish to 65 pounds along with Siamese carp and sorubim all in all a fair bit of sport for a short trip.
So thatâ € ™ s me running out of space folks, but donâ € ™ t forget the five lakes show on 7 / 8 March. By the time you get monthâ next € ™ s newsletter, I would be freezing in the UK, wearing shoes, long pants and jackets for the first time in a year! If your fishing club wants a lecture on Thailand fishing holiday or fishing in Thailand, please contact me as I still have some dates available. Forget the recession, and indulge even with a fishing trip of a lifetime here at www.gillhamsfishingresorts.com Phone 66,861,644,554th So â € ~ To next month, from all us at Gillham, bye for now, thanks for your support and grab a whack.

The Legendary Custom Cars and Hot Rods of Gene Winfield $28.98 Of all the pioneering custom-car builders to come to prominence in the 1950s sceneâ??Harry Westergard, George Barris, and Dean Jeffries, among othersâ??one of the most prolific was a young man from Modesto, California, named Gene Winfield. Cutting his teeth in California’s hopping postwar hot rod scene, Winfield eventually gravitated to the media of custom cars, becoming one of its preeminent purveyors. For the first time, Winfield’s career is examined in this volume fully illustrated with photography from Gene’s personal archive. Written by longtime Winfield protégé David Grant, The Custom Cars and Hot Rods of Gene Winfield is culled from hours of interviews with Winfield and recounts everything from his early days in Modesto and his emersion in California car culture, to his role in forming the Century Toppers car club, his involvement in dry lakes racing, the formation of Winfield’s Custom Shop in 1955, and the impressive string of vehicles that followed. Cars featured include the 1946 Ford convertible that graced the second issue of Rod & Custom, the 1950 Solar Scene Mercury, and the Ford King T that won the 1963 AMBR award, among dozens of others. Grant also delves into Winfield’s involvement with AMT, movie and TV vehicles for such projects as The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Get Smart. |
