Amateur suburban stunt man Rod Kimble (SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE's Andy Samberg) believes he's destined to follow in the footsteps of his late father, who made test runs of Evel Knievel's stunts before the better-known daredevil repeated them and took all the glory. Kimble risks life and limb strictly for fun and the entertainment of the neighborhood kids, but when his macho stepfather, Frank (DEADWOOD's Ian McShane)--who repeatedly beats and belittles Rod in basement sparring matches--develops a life-threatening heart ailment, Rod attempts the biggest jump of his career to raise the $50,000 necessary to get Frank a heart transplant so that he can have one last chance to fight Frank and prove his manhood.HOT ROD establishes its mission statement early on when Rod pedals his moped past a Salvation Army thrift store in his sloppily hand-decorated costume. Seemingly inspired by NAPOLEON DYNAMITE, THE KARATE KID, and the HAPPY DAYS episode in which the Fonz attempts to jump his motorcycle over 14 garbage cans, director Akiva Schaffer (Samberg's longtime cohort in the online comedy venture THE LONELY ISLAND) sets Pam Brady's (TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE) screenplay in what seems like the mid-1980's (complete with Europe-heavy hair metal soundtrack), though allowing for the existence of the Internet and Vitamin Water. The simple plotline is merely a jumping-off point for a series of failed stunts and often hilarious non-sequiturs. Samberg is likeable in his first starring role, but he is more than equaled by a supporting cast including SNL's Bill Hader, Danny McBride, fellow Lonely Islander Jorma Taccone, and Isla Fisher (WEDDING CRASHERS), who comprise Rod's loyal crew. McShane chews the retro scenery when onscreen and the always-welcome Sissy Spacek lends credibility to the proceedings in her few scenes as Rod's mom. mom.

DIVIn the late 1950s a slightly mad kart racer named Frank Duff Livingston hDIVIn the late 1950s a slightly mad kart racer named Frank Duff Livingston had the nerve to enter the quintessential American vehicle-a hot rod-in a sports car race. Hot rods may have been successful in crude American-style drag races, but according to conventional wisdom, they had no place competing on a road course against European sports cars. But Duff and his Eliminator defied that wisdom and beat some of the finest sports cars in the world. The Eliminator soon went into retirement, but many people remembered its achievements. One of these people happened to be Brock Yates, who acquired the Eliminator in the 1990s. Yates campaigned the car in vintage sports car races, and soon the Eliminator was once again beating Ferraris and Porsches on U.S. road courses. The car inspired Yates to build a modern interpretation of the concept, and he took one of the most potent engines available-a Viper V-10-and mounted it in a hot rod chassis with a road-racing-inspired suspension. His goal? To build the fastest, best-handling, and just plain coolest hot rod on the road. The resulting Eliminator Special proved a fitting tribute to the original Eliminator.About the Author:Brock Yates is one of the best-known and most respected automotive journalists in the world today. He is currently an editor for Car and Driver magazine and his byline has appeared on numerous books, features in major magazines, columns for websites and The Wall Street Journal. He has also authored movie scripts for Cannonball Run and Smokey and the Bandit II. He is the creator of the famed 1970's Cannonball Run road race which he chronicled in the best-selling book Cannonball!, published by MBI Publishing Company in 2002./DIV

If you`re a half-bright twenty-something whose greatest dream is to follow in the footsteps of motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel, what would your favorite band be? Well, if we`re to trust the producers of the comedy Hot Rod, starring Saturday Night Live regular Andy Samberg as would-be stuntman Rod Kimble, such a young man would have a serious jones for Europe, the bombastic Swedish prog metal band who scored a massive hit with "The Final Countdown" in 1986. Europe is the only act who appears more than once on the soundtrack to Hot Rod, with four cuts from 1986`s The Final Countdown album included here (though not the title tune, which was doubtless too expensive to license), while the rest of the disc is dominated by similarly overblown mid-`80s fare from Moving Pictures, Stacey Q, Cutting Crew and Giorgio Moroder, as well as an `80s pomp-rock parody from Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age recording as Gown (you can tell it`s a parody because the guitar work isn`t as smooth as on the Europe cuts). Exactly why a kid whose obsessions are mired in the `70s would be so fascinated with music of the mid-`80s isn`t explained, and the dialogue excerpts here aren`t likely to give anyone much confidence in the movie`s ability to generate laughs ("When you go on a date, you put on a shirt" -- wow, someone got paid to write that?), but if you have an appetite for music so cheesy that it ought to be served in individually wrapped slices, this soundtrack certainly delivers the bill, capturing `80s rock at its most over the top (though it`s worth mentioning that Europe album is still in print if you`d rather go for the gusto without any irony getting in the way). ~ Mark Deming Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
